Chapter Seventeen
The next morning, Emma sat in her favorite overstuffed chair in the living room with a mug of Earl Grey tea and the tail end of a hangover. Thankfully, Molly had agreed to take her Sunday morning shift. The Tylenol had finally kicked in and Emma was feeling pretty good, all things considered. Buddy was hard at work, sleeping on the couch beside her.
She smoothed the fleecy fur on his back, loving the silky texture of it, and the softness of his ears between her fingers. When Juliette had first brought him, all Emma could think about was how she had to give him away to a real family. And even though she still felt like he deserved better, she had grown accustomed to having him around. Last week, he had somehow wiggled his way into her bed and now he was a permanent fixture on top of her comforter at night.
On the evenings she sat alone at her kitchen table, she was grateful for the snuffling noises he made as he searched the floor for stray crumbs around her chair. Reading her latest overdue bills was less painful with his warm little body curled up in her lap. For some reason, even though she knew it wasn’t going to last, Emma took comfort in feeling like she and Buddy were a team. Things felt less bleak with him around.
Even the house liked him, which made things so much easier. The biggest perk of all was that the house seemed to know exactly when the puppy needed to go outside. Every once in a while, the front and back doors would swing wide open and the puppy would go running into the yard. It was amazing how easily he slipped into her life. She almost couldn’t imagine her home without him now.
Emma snuggled deeper into her chair with a contented sigh. It was close to eleven o’clock, but she still wore her pajamas—flannel pants with pink doughnuts on them—and a cat tank top that read CHECK MEOWT. She had just arranged a knit throw blanket around her and picked up a new romance novel, when the doorbell rang.
A burst of dread washed over her, and she forced a couple of deep breaths. If it was Rodney again, she would stay exactly where she was. He could ring the bell all day long if he wanted to. She wasn’t answering.
Buddy, on the other hand, was happy to investigate. He barked in glee and scampered into the foyer, pawing at the front door.
After several moments, there was a polite knock on the door.
Emma frowned.
The house seemed calm and no lights flickered.
She tiptoed to the door, but before she had a chance to peer through the peephole, the door swung wide open. What the heck, house?
Hunter stood on the front porch with her file box. He wore a flannel shirt and faded jeans, with windblown hair and a slight stubble that gave him a rather disheveled appearance. Sort of a “Hot Lumberjacks ‘R’ Us” vibe.
